The Tambdi
Surla Mahadeva temple was build nearly around the 12th century. The Tambdi
Surla was originally build for the deity Lord Shiva and also it was a place of Hindu
worship.
The temple
was build in the Kadamba-Yadava style architecture from the weather-resistant
grey and black basalt.
This temple has survived from the invasions of very
great rules like the Portuguese and the Muslims as it is covered with dense
forest. This was possible only because the temple was very small.
Architecture of the temple
The Tambdi Surla
temple strikes the eyes of those visiting it for its unique style of
construction which was possible only because of the hardwork of the craftsman
who worked to make this masterpiece.
It is
considered as the only remains of the Kadamba architecture in basalt stone
preserved and available in goa. The Tambdi Surla temple faces east so that the
rays of sun fall directly on the deity Lord Shiva at the dawn. The Tambdi Surla
temple is managed by the Archaeological Survey of India.
There is a
headless bull which is lord Shiva’s vehical in the centre of the pillared hall
surrounded by four columns. It also has the Kadamba Kingdom symbol, an elephant
trampling a horse is also carved on the base of the column.
